Create Or Die

A Monthly Art Challenge

Here we go!

It’s been a while!

The Create Or Die Project has definitely been silent these past few months… but not dead.  No, not dead at all.  It’s been waiting…  And finally, today we start a brand new chapter of Create Or Die!  And with new creators!  If you don’t already know him, let me introduce my good friend Ryan Kendall!  He’s a writer, musician, and avid gamer from Boston and he’s very excited to participate in the project.  Make sure you check out his website and his Youtube to see all the awesome stuff that he’s up to!

The rules are the same as before. We will alternate creating something every weekday for the coming month, starting today. We have until midnight on the due date to create something… otherwise, we DIE! I mean, the other person gives an assignment. If you need a primer on Create or Die, check out this blog post!.

So, to start it off, here’s a comic I made!  Will it set the tone for this project?  You decide! (no)

Ryan, I can’t wait to see what you create.

March 7 – Three Haiku

Hey yall! Last project! I’ll have more to say about this when it’s not super late/Chris and I will be updating tomorrow! 🙂 For now, enjoy three haiku I wrote this evening:

The snow falls softly down on us
silencing the city.
flakes swirl gold under street lamps.

The wind from the sea blows by
Ruffling hair and scarves
Smells like salt and dreams bygone

Stand at the foot of the castle
You’ve changed, but it hasn’t.
Shadows fade but rock stands still.

March 6 – The Bridge

Wow, it’s late.  Initially, I was not really in the mindset to create something today… but I persevered! I shall not fail again!

There’s this really beautiful bridge close by that goes across the Charles River.  It’s called the Blue Heron Bridge and it’s part of the Charles River Bike Path.  Using some images as a reference, I’ve created a sketch of it!

This bridge is truly beautiful and captivating, but one of the most interesting things to me about it is how inconspicuous it is.  Another stop on the Charles River Bike Path, it’s easy to simply pass by on the way to or from Boston.  And yet, that fact that you’re on a bike–not in a car or some other form of automatic transportation–somehow encourages the opportunity to stop and appreciate the simple magnificence of the bridge and the river rushing below.

The ceaseless rushing of current in a river always makes me start wondering…

I’ve done a lot of thinking about what’s meaningful in the world: what things should have value, what’s important to me personally as well as to the world, how we assign meaning and worth, etc.  One of the conclusions that I’ve drawn is that there really aren’t a whole lot of things that intrinsically have value.  That may seem a bit depressing, even nihilistic, but, in fact, on the contrary, it’s anything but.   The lack of intrinsic value implies that the value something has is directly related to the value that we give it!  The value comes from us.

As artists, as explorers of the world, as people, we have the opportunity and responsibility to place value onto those things that we choose as important to us.  Only we can make the choice to establish that importance, and use our mental capabilities of distinction and judgement to add worth to what we do and create an answer for that elusive “why?”.  In doing so, we can start to imagine a path for ourselves to take.

At the end of the day, this is what the Create Or Die Project has been all about.  The meaning and value that it has is defined by all of us.  So, thanks for helping give value to this project!

Finally, thanks for joining me as I continue to explore my path.  I hope, in some way, what we’ve created here has helped you shed some light on your own.
